Longan

Description

Longan is a highly popular tropical fruit known for its sweet, juicy flesh and small, round shape. The fruit grows in clusters on trees and has a thin, light brown, slightly rough outer skin that is easily peeled off. Inside, the translucent, jelly-like flesh surrounds a single shiny black seed, giving it a similar appearance to lychee, though the taste of longan is distinct—sweet, fragrant, and mildly floral, with a juicy texture.

Longan is widely consumed fresh in Vietnam, but it is also dried for preservation, used in desserts, and brewed in teas. The dried version is often used in traditional herbal medicines or combined with lotus seeds in soups and sweet dishes.

The longan season in Vietnam typically runs from June to September, with regions like Hung Yen and the Mekong Delta being famous for producing high-quality longans. It’s a popular fruit in Vietnamese markets and is sometimes referred to as "dragon's eye" due to the appearance of the seed inside the flesh.
